Internet users now spend nearly double the amount of time watching videos on social networking sites than they did just one year ago, according to newly released figures from Nielsen. In October, people spent 999.4 million minutes watching videos on sites like Facebook and MySpace, up from 503.8 minutes during the same period in 2008. Software company Smibs Inc. launched its real-time web product VideoLobby at the prestigious Real-Time-Web Crunchup in Silicon Valley Friday. The Edmonton company was one of only 10 real-time web startups featured at the event, staged by TechCrunch, a leading Silicon Valley online magazine. About 1,000 people attended at $500 to $600 a ticket, and tens of thousands more watched live online.

LambertFlorida's Attorney General is looking for ways to keep track of communications sent electronically. Blackberry messages sent from Public Service Commission staffers to utility executives shed light on the problems the state encounters trying to track some digital communications. Friday, a tech guru from Microsoft taught the AG's newly formed Sunshine Tech Team how to capture and store instant messages and other online communications.
